1. Material and Standard
What is ASTM A563 Grade 10S
A563 Grade 10S is a high strength structural steel nut grade. Its requirements are basically equivalent to ISO 4775 (Hexagon nuts for high strength structural bolting with large width across flats). Grade 10S is intended for use with A325 and A490 structural bolts.
Chemical Composition
| Element | Composition (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.30 - 0.55 |
| Manganese (Mn) min | 0.60 |
| Phosphorus (P) max | 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S) max | 0.050 |

Grade Comparison
| Grade | Hardness (HB) | Matching Bolt | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2H | 248-352 | A193 B7 | High temp / high pressure flanges |
| 10S | 248-352 | A325 / A490 | Structural steel connections |
| 8S | 150-250 | A325 | Structural steel connections |
Note: A563 10S and A194 2H share a similar hardness range but serve different industries. 2H is for pressure flanges, 10S is for structural bolting.
2. Dimensions and Tolerances (ASME B18.2.2)
ASME B18.2.2 defines the dimensions for inch-series heavy hex nuts. Below is a reference dimension table for common sizes.
| Nominal Size | Width Across Flats (in) | Thickness (in) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 0.875 | 0.437 |
| 5/8" | 1.062 | 0.535 |
| 3/4" | 1.250 | 0.617 |
| 7/8" | 1.438 | 0.710 |
| 1" | 1.625 | 0.813 |
| 1-1/8" | 1.812 | 0.916 |
| 1-1/4" | 2.000 | 1.019 |
| 1-3/8" | 2.188 | 1.122 |
| 1-1/2" | 2.375 | 1.225 |

3. Surface Finish Options
| Finish | Standard | Corrosion Protection | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain | - | None | Indoor, painted assemblies |
| Black Oxide | - | Mild | Indoor, sheltered |
| Zinc Plated | ASTM B633 | Moderate | Outdoor, general |
| HDG | ASTM A153 / F2329 | High | Outdoor, corrosive |
For structural bolting, plain or HDG are the most common finishes. Zinc plating is generally not recommended for A490 bolts due to hydrogen embrittlement risk, but A563 10S nuts may be zinc plated when specified.
4. Inspection and Certificate (EN 10204 3.1)
Certificate Content
EN 10204 3.1 is an inspection certificate issued by the manufacturer's authorized representative, based on specific inspection of the actual delivered product. It must include:
-
Chemical composition: Heat number level chemical analysis
-
Hardness test: Actual hardness values of finished nuts
-
Proof load test: Load bearing verification
-
Heat number traceability: Complete traceability from heat number to finished product
Purpose of Certificate
Large buyers need the 3.1 certificate for incoming inspection and project audits. Without a 3.1 certificate, the buyer cannot prove material compliance to the end user or EPC.
5. Application
Structural Steel Connections
A563 Grade 10S heavy hex nuts are designed for high strength structural bolting. Typical applications include:
-
Steel structures and buildings
-
Bridges and infrastructure
-
Tower and mast construction
-
Industrial plants and equipment
-
Transmission towers
Matching Recommendation
| Nut Grade | Matching Bolt | Washer |
|---|---|---|
| A563 10S | A325 / A490 | F436 Hardened Washer |
| A563 8S | A325 | F436 Hardened Washer |
For A490 bolts, A563 10S nuts are required. For A325 bolts, either 8S or 10S may be used depending on the specification.
6. Notes
-
Structural vs Pressure Application: A563 10S is for structural bolting (A325/A490). For pressure flange bolting (A193 B7), use A194 2H nuts.
-
Hardness: A563 10S hardness is 248-352 HB. This is similar to A194 2H but the two grades serve different industries and should not be interchanged without engineering approval.
-
Certificate Type: EN 10204 3.1 certificate must be based on the actual shipped batch. Do not use test data from other batches.
-
Metric Version: For metric structural nuts, specify ASTM A563M Grade 10S, which corresponds to ISO 4775.
